Research of our team is focused on infection diseases common for both great apes and humans with emphasis on the key human infections (HIV/SIV, malaria). The study of co‐infections of SIV and protozoan and metazoan parasites in model populations of great apes will enable us to evaluate the impact of SIV and HIV in infected great apes and compare the situation in great ape population with what we know about the nature of the diseases in human population. Furthermore, our research sheds more light on malaria’s ecological aspects in wild great ape populations, including the identification of great ape malaria parasite vectors and the determination of the frequency of primate host switching. Specifically, the HPI-lab deals with three interconnected topics related to the infection diseases in both great apes and humans.
